Since being appointed CEO in 2017, James has embarked on a high-impact change programme aimed at delivering a transformative new business strategy, structure and culture which has turned Hearst around to proudly become one of the most respected media companies within the industry.

The acceleration of this output over the past year has put Hearst back on the map. The company has an engaging purpose, brand values that are engrained within the business, diverse and dynamic revenue streams, and a positive culture which champions and celebrates diversity and inclusion.

Under James’s guidance, Hearst has delivered its ambitious mid-term business objective – to be the first premium publisher to reach inflection. The business has increased its share of newsstand and print advertising, grew digital revenues by 30% and boosted revenues across experiential, licensing, accreditation and content marketing by 8%.

Culturually, James has launched countless initiatives to deliver seismic change including introducing a Diversity & Inclusion Steering Group, regular All Staff meetings and parties, continued investment in Learning & Development and a commitment to closing the Gender Pay Gap.

James has transformed Hearst culturally, reputationally and financially, and Hearst’s turnaround was recognised by the industry by being crowned ‘Media Brand of the Year’.
