Channel 4 & Tesco Mobile: The Great British Phone Swap

Channel 4, EssenceMediacom, WPP

Client: Tesco Mobile

More than nine in ten children get their first smartphone between the ages of 9 and 11. For parents, it triggers a wave of anxiety about a digital world they feel shut out of.

Over half of teenagers hold back from parents who they feel don't understand their world - and almost half of parents admit they have no idea what their child actually does on their phone. The standard response is controls and limits. Not understanding - and that was the opportunity for challenger network Tesco Mobile. Channel 4 partnered with Tesco Mobile to create The Great British Phone Switch a social experiment series where real parents and tweens swapped phones for 48 hours, stepping directly into each other's digital worlds. Five long-form episodes tackled TikTok rabbit holes, streak anxiety, cyberbullying and screen-time habits with Tesco Mobile woven naturally throughout as the brand that bridges understanding between parents and kids. We achieved 17.7 million views against a target of 6.3 million. The highest average watch time of any Channel 4 branded campaign in 2025 at 6 minutes 24 seconds, 132% above benchmark. 645 million earned media reach. And consideration among exposed audiences skyrocketed over 66%.
