SunLife and the 1966 FIFA World Cup Final in Colour on Channel 4 in Aid of Alzheimer's Society
Medialab, Channel 4
Client: SunLife and Alzheimer's Society
SunLife, the leading over 50s life insurance provider, is a traditionally direct response TV focused brand. Its core objective was to deepen its emotional connection and relevance with older audiences to maintain its leadership position. During the same period, the Alzheimer's Society was exploring impactful ways of raising dementia awareness and donations during major cultural moments. With the FIFA World Cup fast approaching, a unique opportunity emerged from Final Replay and Whisper to replay the digitally remastered 1966 FIFA World Cup Final in Colour to mark the 60th anniversary of England’s last win. The replay of such a nostalgic match aligned perfectly with SunLife's core demographic – the generation who lived through the original game and who might be affected, or know those affected, by dementia.
Our mission was clear: pull off a rapid, dual-client partnership backed by a clear set of strategic objectives. For SunLife, the partnership goal was to drive mass reach among the over-50s, produce new sponsorship creative that delivered strong cut-through and recall, and build long-term brand consideration and trust. For Alzheimer's Society, it was to generate measurable donation revenue and stimulate a national public conversation around dementia. The entire creative briefing, media planning, production, final compliance approvals and contracting processes for both partners had to be completed within just 3 weeks. This purpose-led campaign successfully turned viewer emotion and nostalgia into immediate action, delivering strong broadcast ratings and immediate returns for both partners by enhancing brand consideration, establishing brand recall, and stimulating public conversation.
